New York, October 12, 2026 — The Global Waste-to-Energy Research and Technology Council (WtERT®) announces the establishment of its dedicated community on SustainChain™, a global sustainability action platform developed by the U.S. Coalition on Sustainability.

Through its dedicated group on SustainChain™, WtERT aims to bring its international network of universities, researchers, professionals and institutional partners into a broader sustainability ecosystem connecting academia, governments, industry, innovators and civil society.

WtERT’s objective is to contribute its scientific expertise and global network to build collective intelligence, strengthen the exchange of evidence-based knowledge, and promote education and awareness of sustainable waste management and resource recovery technologies. By sharing research, practical experience and technological developments, the WtERT community seeks to support informed decision-making and accelerate solutions contributing to the United Nations 2030 Agenda and Sustainable Development Goals.

The urgency for collective action is clear. According to the World Bank’s What a Waste 3.0 report, the world generated 2.56 billion tonnes of municipal solid waste in 2022. Under a business-as-usual scenario, this figure is projected to reach 3.86 billion tonnes annually by 2050. Addressing this growing challenge requires stronger international cooperation, scientific research, technological innovation and investment.

Through SustainChain™, WtERT’s dedicated group will provide a meeting point for its global community to share research, technological developments, projects and best practices. It will also promote informed understanding of resource recovery, circular economy solutions and the role of Waste-to-Energy in integrated waste management systems, helping reduce reliance on landfilling and recover value from residual waste. The platform’s digital capabilities, including AI and machine learning, offer opportunities to facilitate knowledge sharing, identify potential collaborations and accelerate action towards shared sustainability goals.

As the 2030 deadline approaches, connecting knowledge and accelerating cooperation are more important than ever. Through this initiative, WtERT seeks to help transform scientific evidence into informed decisions and practical action for a more sustainable, resource-efficient future.
