Overview

The Global Waste-to-Energy Research and Technology Council (WtERT®) is an international academic network dedicated to advancing sustainable waste management through research, knowledge exchange, and the deployment of best available technologies for the recovery of materials and energy from residual waste.
WtERT brings together leading universities, research institutions, and international partners to collaborate on scientific research, policy support, and technical development in the field of Waste-to-Energy (WtE) and circular economy solutions.
Affiliation with WtERT enables institutions to contribute to and benefit from a global platform of expertise, data exchange, and international cooperation.

What Does Affiliation Mean?

WtERT operates as a non-membership nonprofit network. Institutions engage with WtERT through formal collaboration agreements, typically a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU).

Affiliated institutions are recognized as academic collaborators within the WtERT Global Network.

Affiliation:

  • Enables collaboration in research and knowledge exchange
  • Provides opportunities to participate in projects and working groups
  • Supports visibility within an international academic network

Affiliation does NOT:

  • Grant voting rights or governance participation
  • Confer authority to represent WtERT
  • Create any legal partnership, joint venture, or agency relationship
  • Imply endorsement of specific activities or positions

WtERT Country Chapters

WtERT operates through a global network of country chapters (“WtERT + Country”), typically hosted by affiliated academic institutions.

These chapters:

  • Coordinate activities at the national or regional level
  • Facilitate collaboration among local institutions
  • Support the development of country-specific initiatives

Each chapter is led by an academic coordinator and operates under WtERT’s global framework.

Use of Name and Affiliation

Affiliated institutions may reference their participation using the following wording:

  • “Affiliated with the WtERT Network”
  • “Academic Partner of WtERT”

Any use of the WtERT name, acronym, or logo requires prior written approval.

Affiliation does not authorize institutions to:

  • Represent WtERT in an official capacity
  • Issue statements on behalf of WtERT
  • Imply endorsement without formal approval

Who can join?

  • Accredited universitiesacademic departments, and research centers.
  • Institutions with active research programs in sustainable waste management, Waste-to-Energy (WtE), and broader Waste-to-X innovations.
  • Industry organizations and professional associations may participate as strategic partners in specific initiatives or working groups.

Why Join WtERT?

  • Access a global network of leading academic institutions
  • Contribute to high-impact research on sustainable waste management
  • Collaborate on international projects and policy initiatives
  • Strengthen institutional visibility in the global WtE ecosystem

How to Get Involved?

WtERT operates through a structured affiliation and partnership model.

For Universities & Research Institutions
Request to join the academic network and contribute to research, working groups, and national chapters.

For Industry & Organizations
Engage as a strategic partner supporting technical collaboration and projects.
(Such engagement does not constitute academic affiliation or membership.)
