The Training Workshop of Waste-to-Energy for North Africa was successfully held online on December 5th-6th, 2022. This training workshop was hosted by Zhejiang University, jointly organized by International Consultant Committee of Waste to Energy (ICCWtE), China Everbright Environment Group Limited and Global WtERT Council – Earth Engineering Center, Columbia University, USA.

According to the World Bank’s What a Waste 2.0 report, by 2050, total waste generation in the Middle East and North Africa is expected to double. In these regions, more than half of waste is currently openly dumped, and the trajectories of waste growth will have vast implications for the environment, health, and prosperity, thus requiring urgent action.

Since the beginning of the 21st century, China has accumulated rich scientific research and engineering expertise in the field of Waste-to-Energy (WtE), and has made tremendous progress in building WtE plants that replace landfills, which are considered to be the third-largest anthropogenic source of methane (CH4) globally, accounting for approximately 11% of estimated global methane emissions. China has also invested an estimated US$25 billion in building WtE facilities through national policy and economic incentives. Today, China’s WtE capacity is equal to that of the European Union, the United States, and Japan combined.

Major WtE companies, such as China Everbright Environment Group Co., Ltd. (Everbright Environment) and other leading companies have cultivated a large number of technical and management talents, and developed advanced waste combustion technologies suitable for developing countries. In addition, the “mass production” of Chinese WtE plants has significantly reduced the cost per ton investment (CAPEX) including design, construction, and operating costs of WtE facilities, providing a model of waste disposal that can be afforded and adopted by developing countries, especially Africa.

Featuring impartial industry experts and academic researchers from Zhejiang university, Columbia university and China Everbright Environment Group Limited, this unique two day workshop will present current findings on energy recovery within a broad waste management context, with a focus on the issues of most concern to decision-makers and stakeholders.

The training workshop attended by more than 52 participants representing ministries and government agencies in charge of waste management and Energy sector from Morocco, Egypt and Tunisia, and hasprovided them with an overview of the best available technologies of Waste-to-Energy with case studies with aim to assist them develop a greater understanding of how these technologies work and the opportunities and challenges of local implementation.
