Professor Maria Loizidou is a world-wide well-known scientist, engineer and pioneer in the broader field of environment. She holds degrees from University of London (B.Sc., M.Sc., Ph.D.) in Chemical and Biochemical engineering and a post doc at Imperial College, London. She is Professor in the Department of Chemical Engineering at the National Technical University of Athens, in charge of the Unit of Environmental Science and Technology.

Biography

She has more than 600 publications (http://www.uest.gr/index.php/publications) in international peer reviewed journals and conferences, having 11,700 citations for her work, h-index:59 and h10-index:156. She has had the supervision of over 400 undergraduate & postgraduate diploma theses and the supervision of over 50 Ph.D. students in the field of environment, the majority being on waste valorization and management.

She has been involved in many international, European and national innovative projects, more than 220, as a coordinator and leading scientist mostly focusing on all types of waste, biowaste, wastewater, water resources, renewable energy and climate change. Currently, she continues her active and innovative involvement in the same fields being a front runner of circularity and bio-economy concepts, coupling waste management with the production of value-added products contributing thus, to the restrain of the use of resources.

Over the years she has also held several positions as advisor to numerous European authorities on environmentally related issues including the Directorate General Environment, European Environment Agency (EEA) and Eurostat and has been continuously providing her services to the Greek and Cypriot Ministry of Environment, Energy & Climate Change. She has assisted most of the European countries, prior to their accession to the European Union (EU) to implement the EU Directives related to the Environment. Several non-European governmental authorities have also requested her advice and assistance in key environmental state issues, e.g. MEDA Countries.

She has collaborated with a number of Ministers as well as top management of Ministries, national, regional and local authorities having planned numerous national, regional or local waste management plans. She has cooperated with most of the well-known Universities and Institutions worldwide. Many private businesses operating in the field of environment often address to her to seek her expert opinion.

Over the years she has also held several positions as advisor to numerous European authorities on environmentally related issues including the Directorate General Environment, European Environment Agency (EEA) and Eurostat and has been continuously providing her services to the Greek and Cypriot Ministry of Environment, Energy & Climate Change. She has assisted most of the European countries, prior to their accession to the European Union (EU) to implement the EU Directives related to the Environment. Several non-European governmental authorities have also requested her advice and assistance in key environmental state issues, e.g. MEDA Countries.

She has served as the Dean of the School of Engineering of the Cyprus University of Technology, created and chaired its Department of Environmental Science & Technology and an active member of its Management Board for several years. She was the course tutor for the European Master’s degree in Environmental Management of the European Association for Environmental Management Education (EAEME) where 17 profound European Universities participated to support this unique course.

Prof. Loizidou has been awarded by the Institute Environment and Sustainable Development in Cyprus on 4th November 2015 in Nicosia for her long and significant contribution to the scientific society and research as well as for her success in getting funding for the country in order to enhance environmental protection and reduce carbon footprint.

The LIFE SOL-BRINE (http://solbrine.uest.gr/index.php/en/) project that Prof. Loizidou was scientific responsible for, was awarded by the European Commission the first prize of the GREEN AWARDS among over than 4,000 projects as the BEST LIFE ENVIRONMENT PROJECT within the whole 25-year period (1992-2017) of LIFE financial instrument for the environment, of European Commission. The innovative project was on the treatment of brines from seawater desalination plants using renewable energy and recovery of water and resources with zero discharge to the environment.
