WtERT® Becomes a United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP)-Accredited Organization

December 16, 2024 | The Global Waste-to-Energy Research and Technology Council (WtERT®), a nonprofit research organization, has been granted accreditation as an observer to the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and its governing bodies, including the United Nations Environment Assembly (UNEA) and its subsidiaries. This accreditation marks a significant milestone in WtERT’s global mission to advance sustainable waste management solutions that recover energy and materials from residual, non-recyclable waste, divert valuable resources from landfills, and reduce methane emissions, a major contributor to climate change.

“We are honored to be recognized as an accredited observer to the United Nations Environment Programme,” said Prof. Huang Qunxing, President of WtERT®. “This status strengthens our ability to contribute to international efforts to mitigate climate change through sustainable Waste-to-Energy technologies, promote circular economy principles, and foster collaboration with governments, organizations, and stakeholders worldwide.”

As an accredited observer, WtERT® will have access to public meetings and sessions of UNEA and its subsidiaries. While decision-making within UNEP remains exclusive to member states, accredited organizations like WtERT® play a vital role by offering oral and written scientific contributions during these sessions. Observers are allocated designated seats at official meetings, including the Environment Assembly and the Committee of Permanent Representatives, ensuring their perspectives are part of the global conversation.

WtERT’s academic network—which includes leading universities and research institutions in “30 countries” is uniquely positioned to bring science-based solutions and actionable insights to UNEP and its stakeholders. This academic contribution will ensure that UNEP and its stakeholders have access to the latest science and research, helping key decision-makers develop and implement effective environmental policies that align with global sustainability goals.

In addition, WtERT® will benefit from access to key UNEP materials and documentation through designated online platforms and will participate in preparatory stakeholder events, such as Regional Consultative Meetings and the Global Major Group and Stakeholder Forum. These events provide valuable opportunities to collaborate with diverse stakeholders and advocate for practical solutions that address urgent environmental challenges.
