Dr. Lisak joined NTU Singapore in 2016 as assistant professor and was tenured in 2022 to associate professor. Since 2017, he is a director of Residues and Resources Reclamation Center (in 2022 converted to Resource Recovery Programme) and since 2024 he is Deputy Executive Director at Nanyang Environment and Water Research Institute (NEWRI, NTU). Since 2024, he is co-editor-in-chief of Environmental Research, Elsevier. Since 2021, he is a member of the Technical Committee for Circularity of Materials under the purview of Environment and Resources Standards Committee, Enterprise Singapore. Since 2024, he is a member of Advisory Committee on Hazardous Substances and Toxic Wastes at National Environment Agency (NEA), Singapore. His interests cover environmental assessment, sustainability, sensor development, waste to energy, waste to resources, CO2 capture and utilization.
He obtained significant external funding for my research as Principle Investigator (PI), namely approx. SGD35,5M (total); SGD21,6M (since promotion to Assoc. Prof.), and S$20,1M (in the last 3 years). Among these competitive projects: 16 (total); 10 (since promotion to Assoc. Prof.), and 8 (in the last 3 years); and industrial projects 21 (total); 11 (since promotion to Assoc. Prof.), and 10 (in the last 3 years). Major funding sources for competitive grants include National Environmental Agency (NEA), Jurong Town Corporation (JTC), Public Utilities Board (PUB), Singapore Food Agency (SFA), National Research Foundation (NRF), and Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR).
He has published over 265 scientific publications, among which 162 as main author. Total articles published in last 3 years: 91 among which 52 as main author.
His research resulted in 7 non-exclusive and 3 exclusive intellectual property licenses. The licensees are Nanomatics Pte. Ltd., Aprisium Pte Ltd., and JFE Engineering Corporation (Japan).
He is a co-founder of Nanomatics Pte. Ltd., a spinoff company from NTU, supported by external funding including from the Temasek Foundation; MINT-Start-up Grant from Maritime Port Authority; and Start-up Founder grant from Enterprise SG.
Awards received by Nanomatics: iGnite Award 2023 Grand Final Winner; Prestigious Startup of The Year Award at the 2023 Asian Downstream Summit; Shell Startup Engine 2023 Finalist (Shell); PIER71 2023 Special Mention Award (Singapore’s Maritime Port Authority); Tech Plan Demo Day 2023 Grand Winner.
He is a member of the NTU Teaching Council: reviewing the teaching performance of faculty nominated for Promotion and Tenure (P&T) as well as Educator & Practice-track (E&P) Promotion. Dr. Lisak research is focused on applying advanced thermochemical waste conversion techniques to transform residues, historically viewed as environmental liabilities, into valuable resources. His vision is to fundamentally redefine the waste management landscape, shifting the focus from simple volume reduction to a Circular Waste-to-Resource model that aligns with national and global sustainability targets. His work integrates three critical pillars:
- Advancing Waste-to-Energy (WtE): Moving beyond energy recovery to secondary resource reclamation and CO₂ capture.
- Thermochemical Resource Recovery: Developing pathways for municipal solid waste (MSW), plastics, biomass, and sewage sludge.
- Real-time Assessment Platforms: Engineering sensing technologies to validate the safety of waste and waste-derived products.
This multi-disciplinary approach links fundamental environmental engineering and large-scale industrial infrastructure, with “waste” being the primary feedstock for a low-carbon economy.
