Biography
Nickolas John Themelis, scientist, inventor and professor at Columbia University, was born in Athens, Greece, on April 25, 1933. His parents were Emilia Liakopoulou, daughter of Ioannis and Elissavet of Pyrgos of Ilias and, later, Thessaloniki, and Yannis Themelis, son of Nikolaos and Elissavet Themelis of Alatsata (presently Alaçatı of Turkey) on the western shore of Asia Minor, sixteen kilometers across the Aegean Sea from the Greek island of Chios; the family was uprooted, along with another million Greeks, from Asia Minor to Greece in 1923. Yannis Themelis was a sergeant in the Greek army that invaded Turkey and led the family to safety in Chios and then Agrinion of Greece. He later became a socialist and union organizer and, during the December 1944 communist insurgency, narrowly escaped capture and death in the hands of the Stalinists; his younger brothers, Dimitris and Themistocles were summarily executed by the communists (Yannis Karytsas).
In his teens, Nickolas became very active in the YMCA (XAN) and the Boy Scouts of Athens whom he represented at a 1949 international Jamboree in England. After finishing high school, at the end of the summer 1951, Nickolas crossed the Atlantic on the ocean liner Saturnia, landing in Halifax and from there by train to Montreal where he started his undergraduate studies at McGill University in September 1951.
At that time, his knowledge of English was basic and, as he recalled, the first page of the Physics textbook took a whole day. However, the move to McGill and Canada worked well because at the end of his five-year undergraduate program in chemical engineering he graduated on top of his 1956 class and received the British Association for Advancement of Science Medal for Great Distinction. During his studies at McGill, he had consecutive summer jobs at Dixie Royal Golf Club (Montreal), Steel Company of Canada (Hamilton), Imperial Oil Canada (Montreal), and International Paper (Ottawa). After his B.Eng., Themelis worked for a year at the Pulp and Paper Research Institute in Montreal and in September 1957 started on his graduate research studies under Prof. Bill Gauvin, with whom he maintained a life-long personal and professional relationship.
In 1959, Themelis was married to Doris Irwin, born on Manitoulin Island of Ontario, The couple had two children, Daphne Elisabeth Themelis, resident of Halifax, Nova Scotia, and Alexander Nickolas Themelis, of Guelph, Ontario. After his divorce, he married Rina Lariviere, born in Hawkesbury, Ontario (now deceased); their son, Yannis Nickolas Themelis, was born in Stamford, Connecticut and is resident of Montreal. In 1990, Themelis married Liliana Nikolic, born in Mladenovac, Serbia. The couple reside in Manhattan but the family home is on the north shore of Cape Cod, at the historic town of Sandwich.
The subject of Themelis’ doctoral study was the rate phenomena between hydrogen and fine iron oxide particles moving through a high temperature reactor. A major finding was the correlation of time required for complete reduction with particle diameter. One of the experimental achievements was a two-wavelength pyrometer that measured the temperature of the reacting particles in flight. At completion of his experimental research at McGill, Themelis in December 1959 was engaged by Strategic Udy at Niagara Falls, Ontario, a company developing a process alternative to the iron blast furnace.
In 1961, Prof. Bill Gauvin was asked by Noranda Mines, then the largest Canadian copper company to form the Noranda Research Center. Gauvin invited his recent graduate to head the engineering division of the new research organization to be housed in a new building at Pointe Claire, Quebec. Themelis spent nearly ten years working at Noranda Research, as Director of the Engineering Division. During this period, he was inventor or co-inventor of fifteen patents, including the first continuous copper smelting and converting process, called the Noranda Process.
The Noranda Process
In the first part of his career, Prof. Themelis was Director of the Engineering Division of the Noranda Research Center in Pointe Claire where he invented and helped build the first continuous smelting and converting process, called the Noranda Process.
In the copper production technology used over centuries, copper ores and concentrates were smelted in “reverberatory” furnaces and the resulting “copper matte” was converted to copper in the following copper converting process. The basic idea of the Noranda process was to combine smelting and converting in the same reactor, thus avoiding the use of coal in the reverberatory and producing a high sulfur process gas suitable for the manufacture of sulfuring acid. Several Noranda process plants were built in Canada, China, Australia, the U.S. and Canada. Since its inception, the Noranda process has reduced sulphur emissions to the atmosphere from copper smelting by millions of tons. The first plant, in Rouyn-Noranda, Canada is still operating at Noranda, Quebec, producing copper from a million tons of copper concentrates from Canada and Chile, as well from up to a hundred thousand tons of recycled electronic and electrical scrap.
Kennecott Corporation
In 1972, Kennecott Corporation, at the time the largest copper producer in the world, appointed Themelis as Vice President, Technology of its Copper Mining division, where he directed the operations of the Engineering, Research and Computing Centers, in Salt Lake City. During his tenure, Themelis led a company-wide improvement effort that brought together senior people in mining, mineral processing, smelting, and refining; also, Kennecott was named by IBM as a pioneer company in the use of computers. In 1978, Themelis was promoted to VP Technology of Kennecott Corporation, comprising Metal Mining, Chase Copper and Brass, and Quebec Iron and Titanium. During this period, Themelis also co-authored, with Prof. Julian Szekely of MIT, the pioneering textbook Rate Phenomena in Process Metallurgy. The research contributions of Themelis to metal extraction technology have been recognized by awards of both the Canadian and American Institutes of Mining and Metallurgy.
In 1980, Themelis was appointed Professor by Columbia University (New York City, U.S.A.) and in 1988 was elected to Stanley-Thompson Chair of Chemical Metallurgy. He was Chair of the Henry Krumb School of Mines, the first mining school in the U.S., and founded Columbia’s Earth Engineering Center in 1996. He introduced at Columbia the teaching of industrial ecology and in 1997 led the transformation of the Department of Mining, Mineral Processing and Metallurgy to the new engineering discipline of Earth and Environmental Engineering and was first Chair of the Department. The contributions of Prof. Themelis to engineering in the U.S. was recognized by his election to the National Academy of Engineering.
Prof. Themelis has been consultant to industry and government in the areas of process design and management of material resources, including a review of copper smelting plants and recommendations for improvements, for Hindustan Copper and member of a US-AID team advising the Minister of Environment of Thailand. He is member of the U.S. National Academy of Engineering, member of the New York Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the Minerals, Metals, and Materials Society, Fellow of the Chemical Institute of Canada, member of International Solid Wastes Association, the U.S. Air and Waste Management Association and the Sloid Wastes Association of North America.
Professor Themelis was appointed as Visiting Professor at Tohoku University (1993) and at the University of Limoges (France, summers of 1996-1999). He has been invited lecturer at the universities of Akita, Kyoto, and Tokyo, in Japan, the universities of Chile and Santiago (Chile), Beijing University of Iron and Steel Technology, Technical University of Athens, Berlin and Clausthal universities (Germany), and several U.S. and Canadian universities.
Advancing Sustainable Waste Management
The global economic development has been accompanied by the generation of billions of tons of municipal solid wastes. A lot of effort has gone towards increasing recycling but the post-recycling residues remain a major urban problem and can be managed in only two ways: Landfilling or thermal treatment with recovery of energy, metals, and minerals, commonly called waste-to-energy (WTE). The WtERT organization was co-founded in 2003, by Prof. Themelis and Maria Zannes, President of the U.S. Energy Recovery Council, in recognition of the fact that very little academic or industrial research had been addressed to the WTE route, despite its many advantages regarding resource conservation and greenhouse gas emissions. The work of WtERT, started initially at the Earth Engineering Center of Columbia University and has continued throughout the WtERT network, training of hundreds of engineers and scientists, worldwide. The contribution of Prof. Themelis to sustainable waste management has been recognized by awards of the Materials and Energy Recovery Division of the American Society of Mechanical Engineers and by the Confederation of European Waste to Energy Plants (CEWEP) also one of the faculty winners of the Columbia University 2015 President’s Global Innovation Fund grants for the project titled, “Advancing Sustainable Waste Management in Latin America and Disseminating the Results to Other Developing Regions”. He was co-author of Recovery of Materials and Energy from Urban Wastes and of the waste management section of the IPCC 2015 Report on Climate Change.
Waste-to-Energy Research and Technology (WtERT)
Prof. Themelis is the founder and President Emeritus of the Global Waste to Energy Research and Technology Council (WtERT®), the foremost Non-for-Profit research association on Waste-to-Energy (WtE) worldwide, hosted at the Earth Engineering Center of Columbia University, It bring together engineers and scientists from industry, government and Universities from several countries across the globe to collaborate together to advance both the economic and environmental performance of Waste-to-Energy technologies, and this includes both conservation of resources and environmental quality, and disseminate all research and findings to the general public.
Since the creation by Prof. Themelis in 1995 of the Earth Engineering Center (EEC) of Columbia University, the center has done several graduate studies of various facets of integrated waste management, the Institute came to the realization that, despite the importance of WtE technology to the US, there were no industrial or government research centres dedicated to advancing WtE technology. The only organization addressing the concerns of the US WtE facilities and of the major WtE companies was the Integrated Wastes Services Association (IWSA) formed in 1991 and Its role does not include R&D.
The WtERT organization was co-founded in 2002, by Prof. Themelis in recognition of the fact that very little academic or industrial research had been addressed to the WTE route, despite its many advantages regarding resource conservation and greenhouse gas emissions. The work of WtERT, started initially at the Earth Engineering Center of Columbia University and has continued throughout the WtERT network, training of hundreds of engineers and scientists, worldwide.
