WtERT – Proposal for a Research Working Groups (RWG) on Sustainable Waste Management 2024
Title of the Research Working Group
Resource recovery, treatment and safe re-use of ashes from thermochemical waste conversion technologies
Abstract of the proposed research activity
The focus of the Research Working Group (RWG) is to promote mutual understanding and collaborative activities among WtERT sister organizations through research and innovation. The broad priorities of the RWG are to collaborate in sustainable waste management, reuse of ashes from WtE and waste treatment plants. The collaboration is not limited to incineration only, but also includes gasification and any other waste thermochemical conversion technology that produces an ash fraction.
Task of Working Groups
Working Groups are expected to promote research activities within WtERT. They should document their activities in scientific reports such as publications, recommendations, etc. with explicit acknowledgement of the beneficial use of bottom and fly ashes. In addition, RWGs are expected to organize international initiatives (meetings, conferences, small workshops, etc.) with the support of the Global WtERT Council and/or with its partners. They should also produce an annual report of their activities to be published on prestigious international peer-reviewed journal as special issue and at the WtERT website.
Deliverables
- Quarterly online meetings of the co-chairs and selected members to set the direction of the RWG, collaborations, project proposals, conferences, etc. documented by a comprehensive report in form of minutes.
- 1-2 scientific reports per year, such as publications, recommendations, etc., that explicitly acknowledge the beneficial use of bottom and fly ash.
- Annual competition for PhD students/researchers for the best scientific report in the field of ash treatment and reuse.
- Planning to organize a meeting and conference with the domain of the RWG.
- Annual report describing all activities of the RWG including a global survey of ash production and use worldwide.
