Norwegian pilot plant for Carbon Capture from WTE plant was successful and may lead to 400,000 ton/year industrial scale plant

CCS Pilot Phase Successfully Completed

Fortum Oslo Varme’s Klemetsrud waste-to-energy (WTE) plant has successfully validated carbon capture technology at its pilot plant. The move is part of Norway’s planned full-scale carbon capture and storage project known as Northern Lights. The Northern Lights plan will use pipelines to gather captured carbon from various industries and bury it under the North Sea in geological storage. The initiative will allow some industries to become carbon-negative. The project is a joint effort by Equinor, Total, Shell, and the Norwegian government.  At full-scale the plant will capture 400,000 tons of CO₂ annually, approximately 90% of total CO₂ emissions. The plant used the Shell/Cansolv post-combustion capture technology, which has already been proven at two facilities: the SaskPower Boundary Dam Capture Project in Canada and Lanxess CISA CO2 capture plant in South Africa. The Klemetsrud pilot needed to test on flue gas from waste incineration, and also test the capture efficiency, energy requirements, solvent degradation, and solvent emissions. Other companies can now test the technology on flue gases.
