What is the potential for additional utilisation of landfill gas in the USA and around the world?

In his 2003 review of energy recovery from landfill gas, Willumsen reported that as of 2001, there were about 955 landfills that recovered biogas. The largest number of such landfills were in the USA, followed by Germany and the UK. Willumsen also provided detailed information on 21 landfills in Denmark that in total captured 5,800Nm3 of biogas per hour, equivalent to 276.4MW of contained thermal energy, or 20,000 tonnes of methane (CH4) per year.
